The Moreton Bay Motor Vessel ‘OVALIS’

The Dugong Collective proposes the establishment of a fully equipped Eco-patrol vessel monitoring Moreton Bay’s natural habitats and wildlife: its suggested tasks:

Proactive Monitoring

  • Full-time injured or distressed marine wildlife assistance
  • Volunteer advisers: marine biologists and/or veterinarians on-board or onshore standby
  • Beach stranding; daily/weekly visual and Drone reconnaissance
  • Sea temperature, turbidity, pathogen, pH, nitrogen, oxygen and CO2 concentration levels
  • Sea grass condition

Environmental Projects

  • Moreton Bay Dugong breeding sanctuary feasibility
    I.      GPS transponder placement and monitoring on five female Dugong to gather location, movement and condition data as base information for the possible establishment of a permanent ‘protected’ sanctuary and breeding programme
II.     DNA profiling data utilisation and sperm storage
  • Moreton Bay ‘plastic’ pollution flow & concentration profile
    III.    Turtle activity areas identification
IV.    Juxtaposition analysis and possible Turtle interaction with ‘plastic’ flow/concentration areas

Education interaction

  • School and Community activity programmes
    V.     “Hands-on board”: join the MBMV Ovalis on one of its special ED-ECO patrols; be part of the crew and watch how Moreton Bay’s environment works
VI.     Live video streaming into the classroom from the MBMV Ovalis
VII.   Smart phone Apps, QR codes, Social media and interactive resources
VIII. Moreton Bay Humpback Dolphin, Dugong and Turtle profile
IX.    Grey Nurse Shark kingdom awareness programme

Tourism Opportunities

  • Bay Watching (Book a place on our environmental journey to Moreton Bay)
    • Not just eco-spectators; visitors become active members of our team; come aboard and be a part of the MBMV Ovalis daily missions; see the technology and science behind the scenes.

It is hoped that initial funding will come from Government, Corporate, and Individual sources.
On-going funding will be largely self-generating from eco-passenger tourists, education, and specific interest groups. Income opportunities also will include documentary making, App and merchandise revenue.
Personnel will include a full time qualified Captain, Mate and perhaps a technician… other crew members will comprise volunteer experts and conservation enthusiasts.

Funding is being sought for the ‘launch’ of a fully equipped Eco-Patrol vessel; The Moreton Bay MBMV Ovalis; its mission to monitor Moreton Bay’s natural habitats and wildlife.

Its Proactive functions include:

  • Full-time injured or distressed marine wildlife assistance
  • A crew of volunteer advisers: marine biologists and/or veterinarians on-board and/or onshore standby
  • Beach stranding; daily/weekly visual and Drone reconnaissance
  • Sea temperature, turbidity, pathogen, pH, nitrogen, oxygen and CO2 concentration levels
  • Sea grass condition
  • School and Community education programmes
  • And opportunities for Eco Tourism
